Who is Giving Out the Best Black Friday Deal in Kaduna?

Black Friday originated in the USA.

As Thanksgiving always falls on the fourth Thursday in November, the following Friday is often observed as an unofficial holiday. Because many people are off work, shops drop prices, usually for one day only, to start the Christmas season. UK shops have since caught on to this trend and it was brought across the pond a few years ago. Between 2010 and 2013, Black Friday gradually built up momentum in the UK. In 2014, Black Friday was the peak pre-Christmas online sales day.

Exactly how “Black Friday” entered the vernacular of consuming Africa and Nigeria in particular is still a bit of a mystery.

Whatever its origins, Black Friday has become nearly ubiquitous in the hearts and minds of businesses and shoppers alike, being used to sell all manner of goods around the world.

Here in Kaduna, only jumia and konga shoppers seem to be having all the fun since many retailers in the city don’t see any need to participate in black Friday.

Kaduna Polytechnic Students Protest, Block School Entrance

Students of Kaduna Polytechnic on Friday barricaded the entrance to the institution’s main campus in protest over lack of water and power supply to the school for over a week.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the students prevented lecturers and other members of staff from gaining entrance into the polytechnic.

One of the students, Adamu Muhammad said that they have been suffering from lack of water and electricity for a week and the management has done nothing to address the situation.

“Exams is fast approaching and we the students have been denied water and electricity, we usually go out of the campus to search for water”, he said.

Malama Hauwa Muhammad, an academic staff member who was blocked off at the gate, expressed sadness over the issue saying that students’ welfare should be taken seriously.

“I am calling on the school management to as a matter of urgency to solve the problem at hand so that our students will perform well in their forthcoming exams”, she said.

When contacted, the Registrar of the school, Dr Muhammad Musa, said that the water supply scarcity was caused by epileptic electricity supply to the institution.

Musa also said that rainstorm had destroyed most of the electric poles supplying light to the school but added that the management is making all efforts to fix them.

“There is no way we can supply water 24-hours without electricity, but at the moment we have made arrangements with the state water board to supply the school with water in tanks.

“Moreso, the students want 24-hour electricity and it is not possible given the current performance of the Kaduna Electric.

“We are doing our best to provide electricity by spending huge sums on diesel to power our generators,” he said.

The registrar appealed to the student to understand the school management and allow the school conduct the upcoming examinations without hitch.

The Kaduna State Government Launches the Kaduna State Vigilance Service (KDVS)

The Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai was ably represented by the Deputy Govenor, Arch. Bala Bantex at the flag off of the Kaduna State Vigilance Service at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, Kaduna.

The creation of this body is in line with the Kaduna State Government’s committment to stop hoodlums and miscreants that menace our urban centres, and the bandits that threaten peace and harmony in our rural communities. The security agencies have effected mass arrests of these urban hoodlums, and we hope that the judicial process metes out appropriate punishment to them.

The Kaduna State Vigilance Service is essentially a complementary body that is statutory mandated to assist the Nigerian Police and Security Agencies in prevention and detection of crimes, and also aid the Law Enforcement Agencies in the protection of lives and property.

KDSG Deploys 11,395 New Teachers

Kaduna State Government has deployed 11,395 new teachers to their areas of assignments. An exercise to recruit the remaining 13,605 will be announced by the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).

According to the Commissioner of Education, Science, and Technology, Ja’afaru Sani, SUBEB has so far received 19,000 applications which will be considered in the second phase of the recruitment.

He disclosed this today, Wednesday, 18th April 2018 while briefing journalists in Kaduna.
Sani said that 11,395 newly recruited teachers have been served with posting letters and have started reporting to their schools in the 4000 primary schools across the 23 Local Government Areas of the state.

Sani further explained that following series of complaints of abuses of the recruitment process, the Ministry of Education in conjunction with State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) set up three-man screening committees in all the 23 LGAs to further scrutinize the 15,000 teachers shortlisted for the teaching job. After careful scrutiny the committee filtered the names to 11,395. With this, government is confident that the 11,395 new teachers are competent to teach in public schools.

The commissioner, who said the ministry will soon publish names of the teachers recruited further said among them are MSc and BSc holders.

He also announced that the new salary scale for teachers announced by the state government will come into effect when the recruitment of 25,000 teachers is completed.
He further disclosed that his ministry has equally received architectural designs for the 3 bedroom and 2-bedroom housing to be constructed for teachers in rural primary schools to cater for the accommodation needs of teachers posted to rural areas.

Anxiety In Kaduna As Secondary School Teachers Brace For Competency Test

With the date secondary school teachers are to sit for a competency test in Kaduna State still unknown, a number of the teachers are said to be expressing serious fear of flunking out.

Governor Nasir el-Rufa’i of the state recently disclosed that exam for secondary school teachers would be conducted to get rid of those that are incompetent. “We have finished tests for primary school teachers and we are going to administer competency tests for secondary school teachers too,” he said.

It would be recalled that the state government last year conducted a similar test for over 30,000 primary school teachers in the state out of which 21,780 failed as they were unable to obtain 70% pass mark set by the government.

Those that failed the competency test have been replaced with newly recruited teachers. The competency test for primary school teachers and the subsequent sack of those that failed generated a lot of brouhaha with the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) describing the action of the state government as unfair to the teachers.

Plan to conduct a similar test for secondary school teachers is already beginning to arouse anxiety as the teachers fear that it might be like that of their primary school counterparts and will not augur well for them.

A secondary school teacher with the state government in Zaria said she is not scared of the planned competency test but noted that competent teachers can only be known if they are tested on micro-teaching.

“It should be a test on micro-teaching where the teachers will be assessed in the classroom. There are qualities a teacher needs to possess and this can also be seen in the classroom because some people are very intelligent but are not good teachers,” she said.

“Majority of secondary school teachers are specialized on different subjects, so this should be put into consideration so that a teacher that specializes in English Language will not be assessed on Economics or another subject.

“If the test will be like the one conducted for primary school teachers, competent teachers cannot be found that way,” she added.

Another teacher who gave his name as Ibrahim appealed to the state government to engage the body mandated to regulate the affairs of teachers to conduct the exercise so that teachers can be assessed based on their areas of specialization unlike what obtainable during the test conducted for primary school teachers.

He added that the pass mark should also be fair enough so that the state government does not end up losing competent teachers in the process of trying to keep good hands.

A teacher at Kargi in Kaduna who pleaded anonymity said she is not in support of the competency test for secondary school teachers. “I don’t just like that test and I don’t want it conducted,” she said.

When contacted on the preparedness of NUT towards the test, the state chairman, Comrade Audu Amba, said the union has never kicked against competency test for teachers but has always insisted that such tests be conducted by the right body mandated to regulate anything that has to do with teachers, which is the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN).

“We are not the employers of the teachers. NUT is a trade union that is also after quality and not quantity. If the state government intends to test teachers, it should engage the right body to do so and since government has agreed to engage TRCN, we don’t have any problem with the conduct of the test because that has always been our position.

“Every profession has its regulatory body, so if anything will be done to teachers, it should be through TRCN. So, we are happy that the state government has officially written to TRCN to come and conduct the test,” he said.

Infectious Diseases: Kaduna Govt introduces house-to-house search

The Kaduna State Government has introduced a house-to-house search mechanism to prevent and protect residents against outbreak of infectious diseases.
The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Paul Dogo, said in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Kaduna that government was ready to tackle measles, cholera, meningitis and other viral haemorrhagic diseases.

Dogo noted that the exercise was designed to curb the spread of the diseases across and beyond the state.
He said the state has not recorded any single case in the 23 local government areas and assured that no chance would be taken to contain any disease outbreak.
The commissioner said the state has a robust supply chain management system with medicines that can easily be pre-positioned in hospitals to manage isolated cases. ‎‎
“We have made preparedness for outbreak of infectious diseases such as measles, cholera, meningitis, Lassa fever and other viral haemorrhagic diseases.
“Our robust supply chain management system have medicines that can easily be pre-positioned in our hospitals to manage isolated cases,” he said.‎
Dogo also said that the state have maintained polio-free status since November 2012 and is working hard to build sufficient herd immunity through strengthened routine immunisation ‎programme.
On tuberculosis, the commissioner explained that the ministry had commenced house-to-house search for active tuberculosis patients to curb the spread of the disease by undetected active TB cases within communities in the state.‎‎
He said that to ensure success, the state government deployed 1,240 newly recruited medical professionals to hospitals across the state.
“This has improved the human resource situation of our General Hospitals and better quality of services,” the commissioner said.

Blood Group Compatibility For Marriage For Creating Healthy Family!

Couples should thoroughly consider the question of blood group compatibility before planning their pregnancy especially if that’s their first baby.
This post will provide you with all essential information about blood group compatibility for marriage.

1. Blood type compatibility for couples: why bother?

If you worry about a negative or a positive blood group matching blood group and genotype for marriage, you have to bear in mind that matching blood types for couples is a lot like matching blood with donors and receivers.

However, a lot of people still think that Rh-negative men match only Rh-negative women. It should be mentioned that Rh-negative women are more numerous than men.

It is also known that Rh incompatibility may lead to erythroblastosis fetalis (Hemolytic disease of the newborn-HDN). As a result, fetal RBC can get destroyed and the baby receives severe anaemia or serious jaundice. In some cases, the fetus might even die because of heart failure. This is caused by antigen-antibodies reaction.

This is why Rh+ve men should not have babies with Rh-ve ladies.

Newborn babies suffering from erythroblastosis fetalis might need exchange transfusion. Their blood test is taken checking their bilirubin levels. Excess levels of bilirubin may cause severe brain damage (called bilirubin encephalopathy).

Such babies are apathetic and slow at sucking. Their fontanelles will often be bulging.

These problems aggravate with each subsequent pregnancy. However, incompatibilities in ABO blood types never lead to erythroblastosis fetalis.

Contemporary medicine can prevent erythroblastosis fetalis through applying Rh0 (D) immune globulin at 28 wk gestation and within 72 h of pregnancy termination to the mother.

3. Blood group matching table for marriage

Matching blood types for having babies:
• Man: A = Woman: A&AB
• Man: B = Woman: B&AB
• Man: O = Woman: O, A, B & AB
• Man: AB = Woman: AB
• Man: Rh+ve = Woman: Rh+ve
• Man: Rh-ve = Woman: Rh+ve & Rh-ve.

You might probably wonder what 2 blood types are not compatible for pregnancy. There’s another table for that!

Let’s see which blood group should not marry each other:
• Man: A = Woman: O&B
• Man: B = Woman: O&A
• Man: AB = Woman: O, A&B
• Man: Rh+ve = Woman: Rh-ve.
